1. Assess what's important
The best combination of work and family meets your needs and your family's needs.
2. Forget guilt
Instead of feeling guilty, make the most of work. Work allows you to express different parts of yourself. This time away from your children can give a different perspective on family life, making you a better parent.
3. Team work
Don't try and do it alone. Work together with your partner, family, friends and other carers to devise a way to earn a family income and care for your children.
4. Be flexible
If you have access to flexible workplace practices like special leave provisions, working from home, job sharing or part-time roles, don't be afraid to use them. If they don't, negotiate!
5. Reassess
As your children get older, their needs change, and so may yours. Reassess regularly to check the effectiveness of your combination of work and family.
